The walk starts in picturesque Mosteiro, leading hikers to the idyllic Caldeira, a volcanic crater home to the magical, abandoned settlement of Caldeira do Mosteiro. Along the way, you explore the human impact on the landscape, including urban planning, vernacular architecture, folk engineering, stone-walled fields (belgas and serrados), and footpaths where “the stones / are, more than stones, the strength / of having brought and planted them / under future steps” (Terceiro, by Pedro da Silveira), as well as watermills, aqueducts (levadas), bridges, and stone quarries (estaleiros). Local legends and tales by Nunes da Rosa, from his Pastorais do Mosteiro, are also explored.

Sunset in the West
This hike, which takes place on the official PR3 trail on the island of Flores, Azores, is a breathtaking experience that offers hikers the chance to explore impressive natural landscapes. It begins at the Lagoas Viewpoint, next to Caldeira Negra (or Funda) and Caldeira Comprida, passes near Caldeira Seca and Caldeira Branca, and ends in Fajã Grande, where you can visit Poço do Bacalhau at the base of the Ribeira das Casas waterfall. This route reveals the diversity and beauty of the island. Along the trail, hikers enjoy panoramic views of the volcanic craters and their lakes, as well as an abundance of native (some endemic) and exotic flora. The hike provides an understanding of the extent to which the Azorean landscape is both natural and human-shaped, featuring untouched areas, farmland, and re-wilded zones left by human abandonment. The region’s rich biodiversity is also evident, with potential sightings of seabirds and land birds along the way, including migratory birds passing through, especially at Caldeira Branca. The hike is preferably done in the afternoon, arriving close to sunset, a time when the light unveils the landscape in all its glory.
