Florentine Vernacular Architecture

The traditional architecture of Flores Island is one of the most beautiful and genuine examples of Azorean rural construction. Developed between the 17th and 20th centuries by families of farmers and fishermen, it is characterized by extreme simplicity, the exclusive use of local materials, and perfect adaptation to the humid and windy climate of the North Atlantic.
The houses are almost always single-storey or, at most, ground floor + habitable attic. The walls are made of hand-dressed black basalt stone, without visible mortar, with joints filled with moss or small stones (the so-called “dry-stone” technique). The corners, door and window surrounds, and lintels are made with larger, better-worked blocks, often painted white or ochre.

One of the most iconic and distinctive elements of Florentine architecture is undoubtedly the arched shop door (or “curral door”), located on the ground floor.

  • The “loja” was a multi-purpose space on the ground floor: it served as a cattle pen, tool storage, hayloft, and sometimes even a kitchen on colder days.
  • The perfect arch door (almost always a true or slightly lowered arch) is built with large hand-chiselled basalt voussoirs, without any modern formwork – a feat of popular stonework.
  • The generous width (often more than 2 metres) allowed ox carts loaded with corn or flax sheaves to enter.
  • Above the arch, a small wedge-shaped keystone sometimes bears a simple cross, a date, or the builder’s initials.

When the house had living quarters on the upper floor, access was via an external stone staircase, often protected by a gabled porch covered with handmade cane tiles (the famous dark red “Florentine tile”).

It is an architecture that does not shout — it whispers. And those who know how to listen realize they are standing before one of the most beautiful popular heritages of the Azores.
